Overview

The Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED) Workshop is tailored for equipment owners e.g., machine operators, maintainers, and support staff such as engineering and quality personnel. The course is also suitable for managers, supervisors, team leads, and anyone interested in reducing waste in their production system.

Through practical application, participants will learn the principles of SMED, and the tools, tips, and techniques to bring about systematic changeover reduction by:

  • Mapping the set-up/changeover process to identify non-value-adding activities.
  • Differentiate between internal and external changeover time.
  • Offering ideas and techniques for converting internal to external changeover times.
  • Utilising practical hands-on training in quick changeovers to help you develop a sustainable SMED program in your business.

Workshop Outline

  • SMED – Introduction and Definitions
  • 8 Equipment Wastes – A review of waste in machine changeovers
  • The benefits of introducing SMED.
  • The six stages of SMED
    1. Observe and measure the total changeover time
    2. Separate internal and external steps
    3. Convert as many internal steps as possible to external steps
    4. Eliminate waste from internal steps
    5. Eliminate waste from external steps
    6. Standardise and maintain the new changeover procedure
  • Planning and facilitating a SMED event
  • Practical SMED simulation game to reinforce the theory
  • Course summery and review

Course costs include the training session, a comprehensive set of notes, lunch, and refreshments.

Trainer Profile

John Bolger MSc in Lean Operations

John Bolger, founder, and Managing Director of Lean Manufacturing Systems has >30 years of manufacturing experience with a number of Blue-Chip multinational corporations where he has held senior management responsibility for Equipment Maintenance and Continuous Improvement. His practical experience covers the electronics, medical device, pharmaceutical, and motor industries. As a member of Lake Region Medical’s Operational Excellence team, John played a pivotal role in leading the company to become the first in Ireland to achieve the prestigious Shingo accreditation in 2012. He facilitates practical workshops on total productive maintenance (TPM), quick changeover (SMED) and 8 step problem solving. He is an experienced and motivational project leader, mentor, and trainer.
